Le 28 décembre 2017, à l’âge de 91 ans, est décédé Roland Landry (originaire de Somerset) époux de feu, Rollande (née Cloutier) de Montréal. Marié 64 ans, Roland laisse dans le deuil ses enfants Michel (Élaine), Raynald (Catherine), Normand (Lise) et Johanne (Louis), ses petits-enfants Danièle (Philippe), Paul, Marc, Natalie (Cameron), Sylvie (Josh), Janelle, Charles, Vincent, Jérome et Benjamin et ses arrières petits-enfants, Danika, Élise et Rémi, ainsi que son frère, Léo et ses belles-sœurs Denise et Laurette Landry. Il fut précédé dans la mort par ses parents, Zénon et Anna (née Fortier) ainsi que son frère, Gérard.

La famille tient à remercier le personnel de soins de santé au Foyer Notre Dame de Lourdes et de l'Hôpital Lorne Memorial à Swan Lake pour les bons soins prodigués.

Chez les militaires, il était connu sous le prénom de Jos mais parmi ses proches et sa famille, il était Roland. Il s’enrôla dans l’Aviation royale canadienne en 1950 et après son entraînement fut envoyé à Lachine (Montréal). Son premier métier fut à la maintenance et l’inspection des avions North Star (DC-4) envoyées en Corée. C’est pendant son séjour à Lachine en 1952, qu’il rencontra Rollande. Malheureusement, pendant les deux prochaines années (1952-53), il fut déployé premièrement en Angleterre avec l’Escadre de Transport 426 et ensuite à Seattle où l’escadre exécutait des déplacements aériens jusqu’au Japon pendant la guerre de Corée. En 1953, il fut envoyé à Winnipeg pour faire la maintenance des aéronefs de recherche et de sauvetage. C’est pendant sa semaine de vacance, qu’il voyagea en voiture jusqu’à Montréal pour épouser Rollande, le 1er juillet 1953.

Plus tard, la même année, il fut déployé à Bagotville. C’est à Chicoutimi que Michel et Raynald naquirent. En 1955, il est envoyé à Ottawa, là où Normand et Johanne naquirent. En 1956, il fut assigné à «　l’Établissement central d’expérimentation et d’épreuve », une installation de recherche scientifique à Rockliff et puis ensuite à Uplands. En 1963, la famille déménagea à North Bay, Ontario et pour les prochaines quatre années, Roland travailla sur les missiles nucléaires, Bomarc. En 1967, la famille fut déplacée à Baden Soellingen en Allemagne. Tout au long de sa carrière militaire, il était souvent absent de la famille, parti en mission ou en entraînement pour de longues périodes. En 1970, la famille déménagea pour la dernière fois à Winnipeg où il prit sa retraite et retourna à Somerset en mai 1976 pour prendre soin de sa mère, Anna.

Dès son arrivée à Somerset, Roland coupa ses ailes et s’est installé dans sa maison familiale. À part d’un voyage en Italie avec Rollande, Roland s’est abstenu de voyager à l’extérieur de la province. ll s’engagea activement dans sa paroisse et dans l’organisme des Chevaliers de Colomb. Jusqu’à l’âge de 88 ans, il jouait encore son sport préféré, le curling. Il aimait jardiner et était fier d'être l'un des premiers dans la communauté à planter son grand jardin et y récolter ses fruits. À chaque année, il semait beaucoup plus que le couple consumait. Plusieurs personnes et organismes de charité furent récipient des produits de leur jardin. Comme couple, Roland et Rollande ont contribué significativement aux œuvres missionnaires, aux personnes moins fortunées et aux organismes de bienfaisance. Ils laissent un grand vide dans la famille, parmi leurs amis et dans la communauté.

Vos témoignages de sympathie peuvent se traduire par un don à un organisme à but de charité de votre choix. La messe de funérailles aura lieu le 6 janvier 2018 à 11h, un temps de prière précédera la messe à 10h30 en la paroisse Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité à Somerset. L’inhumation suivra immédiatement au cimetière de Somerset.

J.E. Roland Landry, passed away peacefully on December 28 2017, at the age of 91. He was married 64 years to his beloved wife, Rollande (née Cloutier) from Montreal. Born January 5 1926 in Somerset, Manitoba, he leaves to mourn his passing, his children Michel (Élaine), Raynald (Catherine), Normand (Lise) and Johanne (Louis), his grand-children, Danièle (Philippe), Paul, Marc, Natalie (Cameron), Sylvie (Josh), Janelle, Charles, Vincent, Jérome and Benjamin and his great grand-children, Danika, Élise and Rémi, as well as his brother, Léo and his sisters in-law Denise and Laurette. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Zénon and Anna (née Fortier) and his brother Gérard.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the Home Care staff, the health care personnel at Lorne Memorial Hospital in Swan Lake and Foyer Notre Dame de Lourdes for the compassionate care given to Roland.

He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1950. In the military, he was known as Jos Landry but to his family and friends, he was Roland. Following his basic training, he was posted in Lachine (Montreal) Quebec as an air frame tech where he serviced and inspected the North Star transport planes heading to Korea. It is during this period that he met his future wife, Rollande in 1952. The courtship was short-lived as he was posted first to England with the 426 Transport Squadron during the post Berlin airlift then to Seattle during the Korean airlift, transporting troops and supplies as far as Japan. After the Korean conflict, he was posted at CFB Winnipeg with Search and Rescue. Shortly after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, he travelled by car on a one-week vacation to marry Rollande on July 1 then returned with her to his post in Winnipeg.

Later that same year, he was deployed to CFB Bagotville, Quebec. Michel and Raynald were both born in Chicoutimi during this posting. In 1956, he was posted in Ottawa, during which time, Normand and Johanne were born. In 1963, the family moved to North Bay, Ontario and for the next four years, Roland worked on the Bomarc nuclear tipped surface-to-air missiles.

In 1967, the family moved to Baden Soellingen, Germany and in 1970, the family moved for the last time to CFB Winnipeg where he eventually retired to Somerset in May 1976. Throughout his military career, Roland was often away from the family on missions or on training for long extended periods.

Upon retirement, Roland clipped his wings and settled in his family home (Somerset) to care for his mother, Anna. With the exception of a trip to Italy with Rollande, Roland refrained from travelling outside the province. He became actively involved in the parish and in the Knights of Columbus. His summer passion was gardening. He prided himself in being one of the first in the community to plant his large garden and reap of its fruits.

Up until the age of 88, during the winter months, he was involved in his favourite sport, curling. As a couple, Roland and Rollande contributed generously to Catholic missions, both local and abroad, to volunteer organizations and to those less fortunate. They leave a large void in the family, amongst their friends and in the community.

Prayers will take place on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 10:30 p.m. followed by the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in Notre Dame de la Nativité Parish, Somerset, Manitoba.
