Simon Foidart, surrounded by his loved ones, peacefully went to his eternal rest December 22, 2003 at 4 p.m. at the age of 83.

A loving husband and devoted father, Simon will be dearly missed by Anna, his wife of 57 years; his children Simonne (Rod) Sewell of Edmonton, Arnold (Shirley) of Pilot Mound, Gisèle, Firmin (Caroline) and Aurèle (Diane) all of Winnipeg; grandchildren, Craig (Shannon) Sewell, Candice (Guy) Doucet, Fawn Sewell, Rhéal Sewell, Gilles (friend Tanya), Charles (Marcie), Patrick (Jacque), Curtis (Janda), Adam, Philippe, Vincent-Paul, Rielle, Lisa, Annick, Daniel and Justin; great-grandchildren, Julia and Gabriel Sewell, Simon Doucet, Nateeva Sewell, Skyla and Damon Foidart, Dylan Foidart; one brother Marcel (Madeleine); brothers and sisters-in-law, Martha, Julie, Hubert (Marie) Hacault, Louise (Archille) De Spiegelaere, Céline Tack, Jean (Lucile) Hacault, Benoit Hacault, Armand (Yvette) Hacault, Mathilde (Jean) Fifi, Jeanne Fiola, Germaine Stevens (friend Joey), Lucien (Simonne) Hacault, Michael Solodiuk, Patricia Hacault, Gaston (Heather) Hacault and Émile (Sylvie) Hacault; special friend of the family, Pascale Dalcq; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Simon was born January 8, 1920 and resided in Bruxelles all his life.  He was educated at St. Urbain School then worked on his parents' farm.  Simon was called to the armed services in January 1942. He was trained and served with The Winnipeg Grenadiers. From 1944 to the end of the war in 1945, Simon served with the Cameron Highlanders in Belgium, Holland and Germany. He received his military discharge in January of 1946.  On October 30, 1946 Simon married Anna, daughter of François and Irma Hacault. They settled in Bruxelles where Simon operated a blacksmith shop for ten years. Simon and Anna bought the Lanouette Store which they operated from 1956 to 1982. Simon was Credit Union manager from 1954 to 1974, and postmaster for 25 years. His capabilities as an electrician, plumber, welder and carpenter have been a great benefit to many families in the Bruxelles and surrounding areas. He was a hard working individual with infinite patience. His days began early in the morning and often ended late at night. A man of few words, he was generous with his time, money and knowledge and his was a life of service. Simon has devoted time and talent for the betterment of the parish. He took pride in the maintenance of the church and parish grounds. As his father, Julien, and brother, Paul before him, he rang church bells and served as greeter for ten years. Simon was always very active in the community. He served on many boards including: Bruxelles Bowling Club, Bruxelles History Book Committee, St. Gustave School District, Credit Union Board of Directors and Marigold Home for the Handicapped. He was a member of Bruxelles Band from 1938 to 1999. He was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Holland Branch #121.  His favorite pastimes included playing cards and woodworking. Upon retirement he created many projects, big and small, which he usually donated.  He was predeceased by an infant son, Firmin, parents Julien and Marie (Fifi), parents-in-law François and Irma (Mangin) Hacault, step-mother in-law Agathe (Angers) Hacault, brothers, Paul and Adolphe, sister Séraphine Allard, brothers-in-law, Roland Hacault, Maurice Tack, Louis Fiola, Adrien Allard, Mgr. Antoine Hacault and Michel Hacault, sisters-in-law, Dorothée (Hacault) Solodiuk, Odile (Labossière) Hacault and Monica (Gagnon) Hacault.

Prayers will be held on Friday, December 26 at 7:30 p.m. and the funeral mass will be held on Saturday, December 27 at 2:00 p.m. both at the St. Gerard Catholic Church in Bruxelles.

The family wishes to thank Doctors Bruneau and Desmond as well as the caring staff of Lorne Memorial, Boundary Trails and St. Boniface Hospitals.
