Alfred Tulloch
Alfred James Tulloch lived a long and full life for which he felt most fortunate. He was a people person, gregarious, and interested in everyone he met. He made and kept friends from across this land and abroad and loved to regale tales of people and happenings of the places he had been. Even to the last, he was positive, his phone was always at hand, his TV channeled to attentively watch the movements of the markets, or a favorite sports broadcast and, whenever possible, sat out in the sun. His last years were spent at Riverview Health Centre, unfortunately the result of lower body paralysis caused by a spinal tumor, and died there on November 23, 2024.
He grew up in Broadview, Sask. on a farm settled by his grandparents. He attended a one-room country school until grade 10, then finished in Broadview. His goal was to be a pilot in WWII, but that was not to be as he was needed on the farm. After the war, he travelled to BC working in lumber camps and a gold mine, then to Toronto working in a brick factory. An 11-year banking career with the Royal Bank of Canada with postings around MB and Northwestern ON followed. In 1959, he felt the need for change and enrolled at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, ON, and worked in Shawville, QC assisting a veterinarian. Unfortunately, allergies to cattle made it obvious it would be difficult to work in this field, so he returned west and completed a BSc in Agricultural Economics at the University of Manitoba (1965). He then joined the Francis I. Dupont brokerage firm and trained in NYC in securities and commodities before joining their Winnipeg office as a stock broker. Years with Merrill Lynch, Wood Gundy and Money Concepts followed, ending his career with many long friendships at the age of 80!
In 1970, he ended his long bachelorhood marrying Shirley Matchett of Treherne, MB. They raised 2 daughters: Frances (Simone Povoledo) and Heather (Giovanni Toscano). Alf greatly enjoyed his family, and especially delighted watching his 3 granddaughters – Ariella, Sofia and Madeline grow and develop. In his later years, he became deeply involved in his family history, engaging with kith and kin across the country and abroad. He maintained close contact with all the members of his family – in many instances, the glue that kept them all in touch. The welcome mat was always out. He is survived by his sister Hazel and brother-in-law Glenn (Eleanor) Matchett as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Charles and Evelyn Tulloch, his siblings, Ralph, Jackie, Gordon, Alice, and George.
Alf was, to his core, a man of the prairies, loved the open spaces, the change of the seasons, seeding and harvest. A road trip west from Winnipeg restored and rejuvenated him as nothing else. He enjoyed hunting and fishing trips and, in his youth, baseball, soccer (or football as he called it), curling and golf were a big part of his life. He exercised (jogged until he was 89!), ate a good diet, rested when he needed to rest, reached out to others, willing to extend a helping hand where needed, all this to maintain balance in his life. May he rest in peace.
His family wish to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of CD2 at Riverview Health Centre for their care and attention to his needs.
