Peacefully at the Notre Dame Foyer on Thursday, December 2, 2010, Mrs. Bertha Ketsman of Swan Lake, Manitoba passed away at the age of 98 years.
She leaves to mourn her passing her only son Henry (Johanne) Ketsman, 4 grandsons, Darcy (Sarah), Michel (Lindsay), Patrick and Alex (Veronica); four great grandchildren, Manon, Miller, Grace and Cooper. Also mourning her loss is one brother Prudend Roels, one sister-in-law Elodie Roels as well as many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Bertha was predeceased by her husband Gerard, parents Jan and Celesta (née De Rycke) Roels, by three brothers Bert, Urbain (Gertrude) and Urbain (at infancy) Roels and one granddaughter Kara.
Bertha was 98 years old on September 4 th . She lived in her house at the farm till she was 93, after which she moved to the Somerset Manor till this past May. If one word could describe Grandma it was feisty. She knew what she wanted and wasted no words telling you. She married Grandpa in 1940 and together they farmed during that era of thrashing gangs and would often entertain us with her memories of feeding all these men while growing a huge garden. The boys especially loved hearing about the gopher that was eating her garden and how she got him with her hoe. On Valentine’s Day you were always assured of heart shaped cake. Up to the very end she was still very much in command and lucid.
Thank you to the staff at the Foyer Notre Dame for your compassionate and very respectful care of Grandma. To all of you who have visited Grandma over the years, thank you. For the elderly, a visit, no matter how long, means so much.
Funeral Services will be held in the St. Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church in Swan Lake, MB on Monday, December 6, 2010 at 2 p.m. Recitation of the Rosary and Video Tribute at 1:45 followed by Funeral Mass at 2 p.m. Interment in the Parish Cemetery with Father Francis Eworo officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lorne Memorial Hospital, the Somerset Manor or the Notre Dame Foyer.
