Mom was born on December 7, 1945, the eldest of three children, in Miami, Manitoba. She was raised in Altamont and attended school in Altamont and Miami. Her family owned the Hardware Store in Altamont. Mom started work at the Royal Bank of Canada in Somerset then later Manitou became her home branch. In 1964, Mom married Denis Labossiere. They lived on the family farm in St Leon. In 1965, a daughter, Evelyn, came along. For five years we were on the farm then moved to Manitou. Dad would do the commuting to the farm while Mom walked to work.
Dad had health issues and died suddenly in 1999. A year later, due to corporate structure changes, Mom retired after 34 years of service at the age of 55 from the Royal Bank of Canada. Clients and staff loved her. Life became quiet after Dad’s passing so she got a stray farm cat from Aunt Darlene. She called it Patches and was great company and a good cat. Mom was involved in her community volunteering for the Manitou Health Auxillary, Oak Valley Productions, the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies group. Once a banker always a banker, Mom would audit small group’s books without expecting anything in return and was the bookkeeper for the church.
Mom loved to travel with different family members to places like Hawaii, Greece, Nova Scotia, Vancouver Island, did some bus tours through the States. Mom picked up golf later in life with her friend Betty. They would travel to Arizona together for 3 weeks in the winter. She would go to dances with her gal friends. It is at a dance where she met Ken Bowman. They enjoyed riding bikes, walking, fishing and visit with friends and travelled to East and West Coast to visit Ken’s family. In winter they would take trips to Cuba, they loved the music and people in Cuba.
Mom was the family cheerleader. She was involved with the grandkids, kept in touch with the siblings. Family meant everything to her. She was a caregiver to her mom, Angie, as well for a number of years.Mom liked a clean, tidy house. She tried her hand at various crafts such as paper tole, china doll painting, knitting. Mom was a great pie maker. Her crust was so good nothing can compare. Playing cards or dominoes, entertaining and hosting suppers for family and friends. Gardening and yard work was enjoyable to Mom. Shopping was a good pastime shared with her mom and daughter.
Mom’s health had deteriorated and this brought a move to the Pembina Manitou Care Home residing for a little over two years. She took everyone by surprise on her peaceful passing. The Care Home residents and staff all loved mom. Special mention to her longtime friend, Elsie for her visits and care for Mom.
Mom left her family a legacy of unconditional love and a joyful spirit. She was there for all the events - big or small. We will miss you Mom.
