Doris Hardern

Peacefully at the Lorne Memorial Hospital in Swan Lake, Manitoba on Monday, October 24, 2005, Mrs. Doris Hardern of Manitou, Manitoba passed away peacefully with her family at her side at the age of 80 years.

Doris was born on June 13, 1925 in England.  Doris was one of seven children in her family.  She was predeceased by her husband Bill, parents Fred and Gladys Shufflebotham, sister Gladys Edwards, brothers Frank, Fred, Harry Shufflebotham and niece Lynne Hall.

Doris leaves to mourn her three daughters Gwen (Vic) Voth, Shirley (Rudy) Voth, Brenda (Les) Murdy, 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.  Two sisters-in-law Kay Armstrong of Killarney, and Iris Sharp of Boissevain, as well as two sisters Bella and Edith of New Castle, England.

Doris and Bill met in England in 1942 where Doris was working in an ammunition factory.  Doris and Bill were later married in 1945 in England.  Doris then came to Canada in 1946 where they resided in Long River district and farmed for 10 years.  In this time they welcomed three daughters into their home.  They moved to Manitou in 1962 and purchased the Manitou Bus Depot which they owned and operated for three years.

Doris and her family later moved to Elm Creek when Bill accepted a job with the Highways Department.  They remained there for eight years until Bill's failing health required him to take an early retirement where a decision was made to reside in Manitou to be close to their family and friends.

Doris was fun loving and enjoyed spending her time with family, friends, playing cards, dancing, traveling, camping, fishing, and was the life of the party during family gatherings.  Her sense of humour was contagious to many who knew her.  Doris was a active member of the Ladies Legion Auxillary for 50 years.  Doris also enjoyed her annual meetings in Brandon for War Brides.  Doris also enjoyed her daily coffee times at Eddy's Café with family and friends.

Family meant everything to Doris and she spent much time with each and every one of them whenever it was possible.  She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

General Viewing will be held at the Manitou United Church on Friday, October 28, 2005 from 7 - 8 p.m.  Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2005 at 2 p.m. with Reverend Laurie Simpson officiating.  Interment to follow in the Manitou Community Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Lorne Memorial Hospital, Palliative Care Unit in Swan Lake or to The Canadian Cancer Society.
