Elvira (Ellie) Rempel
With deepest sorrow, we announce the death of Ellie Rempel at the age of 88 years at Concordia Hospital, Winnipeg on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband Jacob and her grandson Daniel Dureault, both of whom she loved dearly and missed greatly. She will be sadly missed by children Edward (Jane), Linda (Al), Leonard (Carmen), grandchildren Sean (Lindsay), Remi (Carrie), Melissa (Lorenzo), and great-grandchildren Brodey, Jayden and Paige.
Ellie was the first child born to Franz and Maria (nee Wall) Schroeder in the small village of Dnepropetrovsk in Ukraine, Russia on September 15, 1926. She and her family immigrated to Canada in 1930. Ellie met and married Jacob Rempel in 1954 and they settled in Starbuck, Manitoba where they built a successful life for themselves and their children. Ellie continued to live on the farm even after retirement, only moving to an apartment in the village of Starbuck when her mobility declined.
Ellie was a kind and gentle soul who loved the farm, her cats and flowers (especially blue pansies). She also said she was the birds ’ best friend, providing them with food and water even when walking became more difficult. She recently became a loyal Jets fan and rarely missed a televised curling game. She spent many hours reading, knitting and following world affairs. Ellie was always interested in the activities of her family and was especially proud of Sean successfully becoming a journeyman for Manitoba Hydro.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the Macdonald Ambulance Service for their swift and caring response and the staff at the Concordia Hospital for their exceptional and attentive care of Ellie and their compassion for our family. We will never forget your kindness.
A celebration of Ellie ’ s life will take place Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Starbuck, Manitoba with interment to follow at the Springstein Mennonite Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Starbuck Community Hall.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
