Joe Martin

Dis abay anin

In loving memory of Joseph Martin, a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, who passed away peacefully at the Swan Lake Memorial Hospital on December 16, 2011.  He spent the last few months in the hospital with Emma always by  his side.

Joe was born on July 15, 1938.  He and his wife Emma have 9 children and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He worked hard all his life and always lent a helping hand to anyone who needed him.  Always full of laughter and jokes, that is how everyone remembers him spending his days while he worked around the yard.  Joe always had a nickname for everyone and his favorite pastime was “Wheelin’ and Dealing” on Swap and Shop Radio.

Prior to moving his family back to Swan Lake First Nation in 1985, he was employed at the Manitoba Hog Commission in Winnipeg for 12 years.  Upon returning to Swan Lake First Nation, doing his own farming, he then took on the Foreman position of grading the potatoes for 9-10 years for the Band Farm.  Joe was always working on odd jobs and even worked on numerous farms throughout Southern Manitoba.  He made many friends with farmers from the surrounding communities.

He will  be sadly missed by his wife Emma of 57 years, sons: Doug (Ann Marie), Curtis (Rhonda), Ivan (Virginia) and John (Angela); daughters: Carol, Joey (Floyd), Nancy (Tony), Annabelle (Steven) and daughter-in-law Marlene Martin.  Also left to mourn are his sisters:  Doreen (Ed), Victoria (Jim) and Maggie (George) as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Joe was predeceased by his parents Johnny and Alice Martin; brothers: Robert Cameron, Raymond Mataywashing, Clifford Martin and Frederick Martin;  Sisters: Lucy Jane and Nora; son, Melvin Martin Sr., granddaughters: Sonya Joy, Angel Dawn Marie, Shannon Martin and twin granddaughters and grandson Joseph Thomas Martin.  He was also predeceased by his in-laws Mary and Frank Cameron and Gertrude Cameron.

A Traditional Wake will be held at the Swan Lake First Nation Community Hall on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 4 p.m. followed by the Traditional Funeral Service on Tuesday at 2 p.m.  Interment will take place at Indian Springs Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Melvin Martin Jr., Terry Martin, Ronald Martin, Bruce Martin, Phillip Martin and Errol Cameron.

Honorary Pallbearers will  be all friends and family.

The family would like to gratefully thank the Swan Lake Lorne Memorial Hospital Nurses and Staff.
