Keith Gorrie

Peacefully at the Treherne Hospital on Thursday, October 14, 2021 Mr. Keith Gorrie of Treherne, Manitoba passed away at the age of 89 years.

He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Sharon (Don) Mahon, Barb (Murray) Vigar, Myrna (Rick) Sundell, Naomi Timmerman and Jim (Louise) Gorrie; his grandchildren, Lonna (Brad), Kari (Gino),Trevor (Nicky), Jeff (Laura), Breanne (Brett), Connor (Andrea) and Michael (Haley); his great-grandchildren, Kade, Taryn, Ty, Raina Henley, Mason, Blake, Lexi, Ava, Levi and Emersyn. He also leaves to mourn his siblings, Emma Garden, Clifford Gorrie, Doreen (Pete) Smith and Dale (Irene) Gorrie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Keith was predeceased by his grandson Craig Sundell his parents Jim and Florence Gorrie, his sister Vera (William) Garden and his brother-in-law Don Garden.

Dad was born on the family farm on May 25, 1932, the second oldest of a family of six children. He attended Cassandre School, the social centre of the district. Special memories of delicious homemade ice cream, ball tournaments in the pasture, very cold winters with the lunch cans sitting in the corner that were often frozen. A stable was built to house the horses that transported the children to school. Living south of Pinkerton Lake with baskets of food picnics at Birch Landing on the north side, the district known for so many children in one area.

Our grandmother Florence boarded the teacher, and this was how Dad’s love of music began. At the age of 9, one of these teachers by the name of Bill Desjarlais taught him to play mandolin, guitar but loved the banjo the most. With his sisters Emma and Vera playing the piano and younger brother Clifford playing guitar, music was played daily! Family was always very important to Dad, Sundays were spent visiting family, picnics at Lake Seven, tobogganing, snowmobiling in the Sand Hills and as we got older many trail rides riding the horses. We belonged to the 4-H Calf Club and the 4-H Pony Club. Dad loved the “animals” he could be heard whistling while doing chores, always hearing Dad say how smart animals are. He was so proud of his team of chore horses, especially when we thought there would be no school because of a “snow day” his faithful team always managed to meet the school bus!

After Dad had his neck injury in 1971, he drove a school bus for 40+ years, always whistling, loving this job. He retired to the Legion Lodge in Treherne where he was still able to play lots of music and enjoy a suite full of instruments! With the family birthday calendar on the wall we all got a phone call with “Happy Birthday” wishes being sung while playing a guitar! We will miss you Dad but are comforted knowing there will be lots of music in Heaven with your family and friends. Love and joy lives in memories of specials times.
