Lorne Van Achte 1936 – 2020

We are saddened to announce the untimely passing of our beloved father, grandfather and brother. Lorne was a loving father to Blaine (Sharon), Kelly (Annette) and Scott; grandfather to Carmen, Derek, Greg, Brad, Nikki, Kaelin and Kelsey; and brother to Evelyn DeKoninck, Bernice (Bert) Pouteau, Isabel (Raymond) McKinney & Maureen (John) Gimpel, his sister in-law Maureen (Wilfred) Maskow.

Lorne was predeceased by his loving wife Gail, his brother Jerry, brother George, his daughter-in-law Kim, brothers-in-law Raymond and John and sister-in-law Beryl and parents Victor and Anna.

Lorne’s boys were his pride and joy; he was very involved in all their sports as a parent on the side lines and as a coach. He loved to watch the boys play competitively and he was always there to cheer them on.  He was also so very proud of his grandchildren’s and was at all their activities watching and cheering them on. Whether it be hockey, baseball, soccer, curling, dance or gymnastics he was always seen in the stands.  He was so very proud of all their sporting accomplishments.   Throughout the years the family enjoyed many camping trips where many great memories were created.

Lorne had a 40-year long career at Manitoba Hydro, as a lineman, Crew Forman and a Safety Officer. While working he travelled and made many friends across the province travelling to, Treherne, Churchill, Thompson and retired in 1992 as a Safety Officer in Selkirk.

He created some lifelong friends while working at Manitoba Hydro and enjoyed many good years of retirement. During retirement, Lorne loved doing odd jobs for his family and friends. One of his favourites was climbing trees and trimming or cutting them down. He would leave in the morning with a small cooler with a few waters and a sandwich and wouldn’t be home until supper. He also enjoyed building birdhouses and created some great masterpieces, he kept busy for many years.

Lorne wasn’t a warm and fuzzy kinda guy, but he sure knew how to make you crack a smile and have a good belly laugh at his jokes. He wasn’t known for his long conversations and was short versed on the phone. He would call, tell you what he needed to say and then hung up, no hello no goodbye. He often left you hanging with the phone in your hand he hung up so quickly. He loved a good game of crib and he played it a lot with his sons and his grandchildren. Some might say he enjoyed winning even more, as he was often caught pegging a few extra points when you weren’t looking.

Lorne had so many friendships over the years with a few special ones, his neighbours for over 30 years; Lorne and Candy Stanley as well as his dear friend Helen Smiley.

He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends. Say “Hi to mom, we love you and will miss you”. Love Blaine, Kelly and Scott

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

A private family celebration will be held to honour Lorne’s wishes.

The special moments and memories in your life will never change. They will always be in your heart, today and forevermore.
