Marion McCallum
(nee Hird)
Peacefully, after a lengthy battle with cancer, at the Health Sciences Centre on Thursday, April 22, 2010, Mrs. Marion McCallum of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away at the age of 71 years.
Remaining to forever cherish Marion’s memory are her loving husband and best friend of 50 years, Wilfred; sons Brent (Brenda); Kevin and daughter-in-law Joyce; and daughter Myra and son-in-law Grant Tillett; five grandchildren, who were the light of her life, Jordan, Christopher, Rylan, Ian and Makenzie; sisters Jean Hird, Eleanor (Ken) Buchanan, and brother Jim (Lena) Hird; aunts, Alice Fraser, Margaret Watson and Eva Watson and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents George and Isabella (Bella) Hird of Treherne.
Marion grew up on the farm in Treherne, Manitoba. She attended Arbroath School until Grade 10 and completed high school in Treherne. She attended Normal School in Winnipeg and taught school at Harmer, Shaughnessy Park and Frontenac. She was then a stay-at-home mom and later returned to work at Lewiscraft where she was involved in doing a wide range of crafts from knitting and crocheting to floral arrangements to children’s crafts, but most of all oil and watercolour painting were her passion. She was a member of the St. Vital Art Group and participated in the Artarama Art Show in recent years.
Wilf and Marion were married on August 15, 1959. They enjoyed camping with their young children, cross-country skiing, travelling, and a good laugh over a card game. Later in life, all types of dancing including square, round, pattern and old-time dancing filled their lives. Marion felt so fortunate to have such a caring group of dance friends.
Her husband, children and grandchildren were the most cherished and loved part of her life. She was an avid fan of her children’s activities such as hockey, ringette, basketball, soccer and highland dancing to name a few. This enjoyment continued with the grandchildren’s sports and school achievements.
Marion loved nature and gardening, so the cottage at Belair was a cherished retreat where family and friends gathered and enjoyed numerous get-togethers with great food and fellowship as she also enjoyed cooking and baking.
Thank you to all the family for their love and support during Mom’s illness, especially Linda and Derek, Aunt Jean, Sandra and Aunt Alice.
Thanks to Dr. Czaykowski and Denise, Dr. Hockman, Dr. McKay and the great team of nurses at CancerCare and wards GA3 and GH3 at Health Sciences Centre.
Funeral Services will be held in the Meadowood United Church, 1111 Dakota St. in Winnipeg, on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Shelly Manley-Tannis officiating. Interment will take place at the Woodlands Cemetery at a later date.
