Msgr. Roger Bazin

Le samedi 2 mai 2026, est décédé au Centre de Santé de St-Claude, Manitoba, Monseignor Roger Bazin, de St-Claude, MB. Il fut précédé par ses parents Louis Bazin et Éloyse Bourrier; ses sœurs Raymonde et Lucienne, et ses frères Henri et Denis. Lui survivent son frère jumeau Gérard (Yvette), sa belle-sœur Lucille, sept neveux et nièces et leurs familles.

Roger Bazin de Saint-Claude, Manitoba, est né le 16 juin 1937 à Saint-Lupicin, Manitoba. Après ses études primaires et secondaires, il entreprit ses études en philosophie au Collège de Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, pour les terminer au Collège de Saint-Boniface, après quoi, il compléta 4 années de théologie au Grand Séminaire du même nom à Winnipeg. Il fut ordonné prêtre dans son village de Saint-Claude, pour le diocèse de Saint-Boniface, le 17 juin 1962.

Après son ordination, l'abbé Bazin fut nommé directeur des étudiants pour deux années au Petit Séminaire Saint-Jean à Fort Alexandre, Manitoba. Il assuma la tâche de recteur pour la même institution pendant six ans à Otterburne, Manitoba, avec une responsabilité pastorale additionnelle à la Réserve Roseau River au Manitoba.

En septembre 1970, l'abbé Bazin s'enrôla dans les Forces canadiennes comme aumônier militaire, et servit à la Base de Borden, en Ontario. Dans les années qui suivirent, il fut aumônier à la Base de Chatham au Nouveau-Brunswick et étudia en Écritures Saintes une année à London, Ontario, pour ensuite être nommé assistant Aumônier de Commandement à Winnipeg, au Manitoba. Après trois ans comme Directeur adjoint des services de Pastorale et de Chancellerie (CR) au Quartier général de la défense nationale à Ottawa, l'abbé Bazin devenait en 1982, aumônier de la Base Baden-Söllingen, Allemagne, jusqu'à sa promotion aux responsabilités d'Aumônier de commandement aux Forces canadiennes en Europe. Nommé Aumônier de Commandement à Trenton, Ontario en 1986, il exerçait la même responsabilité, en 1988 au Quartier général du Commandement aérien à Winnipeg. En 1989, l'abbé Bazin revint à Ottawa pour assumer le poste de Directeur de l'Aumônerie catholique romaine (administration), au seine de la Division de l'Aumônerie générale (CR). Au cours de ses années de services militaires, l'abbé Bazin fut promut du grade de capitaine et les suivants pour alors, le 17 juillet 1992, être promu au grade de Brigadier-général en fonction au poste d'Aumônier général (CR), C'est à cette même date que l'abbé Bazin fut nommé Vicaire général de son Excellence Monseigneur André Vallée, Évêque du diocèse militaire, honoré du titre de prélat d'honneur accordé par Sa Sainteté le Pape Jean-Paul II. Il prit sa retraite d'aumônier militaire le 15 août, 1995.

De retour en ministère diocésain, Mgr Bazin servit comme prêtre administrateur de la paroisse Saint-Louis, à Kenora, Ontario. Durant ce terme, il servit en même temps un an comme administrateur du diocèse de Thunder Bay, Ontario, faisant la navette entre les deux villes, chaque semaine, par avion. En 2001, Mgr Bazin prit sa retraite pour retourner et demeurer, avec sa sœur Lucienne, à leur domicile à Saint-Claude au Manitoba. De septembre 2004 à septembre 2005, à la requête de l'Archevêque, il servit, pendant un an, comme administrateur de la paroisse de Saint-Claude.

Monseigneur Bazin se dévoua comme membre de différents comités dans sa communauté de Saint-Claude en la Société historique, aux Archives St-Claude, à la Bibliothèque de St-Claude, au Comité du cénotaphe, et au Comité de tourisme et marketing.

Mgr Bazin, toujours reconnu comme l'abbé Roger' par ses amis, fidèle à sa vocation et croyant aux valeurs spirituelles et de patriotisme, s'est donné au service de l'évangile et de dévotion à l'eucharistie pour implanter ces principes de foi chrétienne fermement aux cœurs des croyants et en la communauté.

Les funérailles, présidées par Mgr Noël Delaquis, auront lieu à l'église catholique Saint-Claude le samedi 9 mai 2026. Récitation du chapelet à 13 h 30 et messe à 14 h. L'inhumation se fera au cimetière paroissial Saint-Claude. La cérémonie sera diffusée en direct sur www.afh.ca

La famille veut remercier les médecins et le personnel du Centre de Santé de St-Claude, ainsi que Josiane et Robert DeSmet pour leur compassion et leurs bons soins. Le réconfort spirituel apporté par le Père John, fut beaucoup apprécié.

On Saturday May 2nd 2026, at the St. Claude Health Centre, Monsignor Roger Bazin from St. Claude Manitoba, passed into eternal life. Predeceased him, were his parents Louis Bazin and Éloyse Bourrier, his sisters Raymonde and Lucienne, his brothers Henri and Denis (Buzz). Surviving him are his twin brother Gérard (Yvette), sister-in-law Lucille, seven nieces and nephews and their families.

Born on June 16, 1937, in St. Lupicin, Manitoba, Roger Bazin did his elementary and high school in St. Claude. After high school ended, he did 3 years philosophy studies at St. Boniface College and then he did 4 years of theology at the St. Boniface Major Seminary. He was ordained priest for the St. Boniface Diocese on June 17, 1962. Following 7 years of ministry as Associate Director and then as Director at St. John Minor Seminary in the diocese.

Father Roger Bazin joined, in September 1970, the Canadian Military Chaplaincy and was posted to CFB Borden, Ontario. In subsequent years he served in a variety of chaplain positions. After serving as Base Chaplain in CFB Chatham for three years, he was assigned for Holy Scripture studies at Divine Word Institute in London, Ontario and was then appointed Assistant Command Chaplain of Air Command, Winnipeg, responsible for coordinating pastoral services on the Radar Stations across Canada. In 1979, he was posted to NDHQ, Ottawa, as Associate Director of Pastoral and Chancery Services (RC). In 1982, was assigned to Europe as Base Chaplain of CFB Baden-Söllingen, Germany. Then posted in Lahr, Germany, he was appointed Command Chaplain of CF Europe. In summer 1986, he returned to Canada to assume the position of Command Chaplain of Training Systems in Trenton, Ontario. In 1988, he was promoted to the responsibility of Command Chaplain at Air Command HQ in Winnipeg. He was then assigned, in 1989, the role of Director of Chaplaincy, at the Chaplain General Division (RC) in Ottawa. Throughout his military service, Father Bazin was promoted from the rank of captain to the rank of, in July 1992, brigadier general, to serve as Chaplain General (RC). On the same date, the Military Bishop, Most Reverend André Vallée, appointed Father Bazin as his Vicar General, with the distinction of Prelate of Honour, given by His Holiness Pope John Paul II, until retirement from the military in August 1995.

Back in diocesan ministry, Msgr. Bazin then served as pastor for 7 years at St. Louis Parish in Kenora, Ontario, and during that period, was appointed, for one year, administrator of Thunder Bay Diocese, shuttling weekly by air between the two cities. In 2001, he retired and went back in his hometown of St. Claude, Manitoba, to share home with sister Lucienne. From September 2004 to September 2005, at the urgent request of the Archbishop, he served one year as St. Claude Parish administrator.

Msgr. voluntary served as member of different committees in the St. Claude community: the Historical Society, the St. Claude Archives, the St. Claude Library, the Tourism & Marketing Committee and on the local War Cenotaph Committee.

Msgr. Bazin (known affectionately as Fr. Roger by his friends), faithful to his priestly vocation and with patriotic heart dedicated himself to the promotion of the gospel message and the eucharistic devotion among people in his ministry; treasured values for faith growth.

The Funeral Service, presided by Msgr. Noël Delaquis, will be held at the St. Claude Catholic Church on Saturday, May 9, 2026. Recitation of the Rosary at 1:30pm and Mass at 2:00pm. Burial will be at the St. Claude Parish Cemetery. The service will be live-streamed at www.afh.ca
