Pauline Angela Shirtliff

(nee Lachance)

Pauline Shirtliff, of Starbuck, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2009, at the age of 75, at home with her family at her side, after a well fought battle with cancer.

She leaves to mourn her husband of 53 years, Alvin, her children Neil (Judy), Milton (Brenda), Gregory (Brenda), Marcella (David Lyons), and Paul; as well as her cherished grandchildren Jason, David, Ryan, Andrew, Justine, Nicholas, Bailey, Kendal, Hayley, and Mia. Also her siblings Adrian (Ida), Lucille, Anita (Curt), Rene (Beverly), and Carol, her sisters and brothers-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pauline was predeceased by her daughter Heather, her parents Clement and Bernadette Lachance, and her brother Lionel.

Born in St. Eustache, Manitoba on July 27, 1933, Pauline attended school at St. Eustache and graduated from high school at St. Joseph’s Academy in St. Boniface. Pauline taught school for one year before she married Alvin, at which time she settled on the family farm where she resided until her death.

It was there that she devoted her life to their farm, her family and her community. Pauline was dedicated to her children, encouraging their accomplishments and pursuit of higher education. She was proud of her home, guiding extensive renovations to the heritage house where they resided. She was especially proud of her flower gardens, beautifully kept yard and vegetable garden. She was an avid supporter of her community as a multi-year 4H leader and lifelong member of the St. Paul’s Catholic Church at Starbuck, where she cherished her service in the choir. Later in life, Pauline’s love of her husband, children and her adored grandchildren became the focus of all her attention and love. She will also be missed by many friends at home, and those made over the years at their winter retreat in Thousand Palms, California.

The family would like to thank all of the friends and family that have visited, brought meals and provided supported over the years. Special thanks to Dr. Bereznay, Becki Ammeter, Agnes Weidman, Dr. Woelk, and all of the excellent staff at CancerCare Manitoba.

A celebration of Pauline’s life will be held on Monday, April 20, 2009 at 2 pm at Sacre Coeur Roman Catholic Church in Fannystelle, Manitoba.  Reception to follow at the Starbuck Hall.  Family interment at a later time.
