Roland Joseph Philias Poirier
Aug 29th 1930 – Feb 10th 2016
It is with very sad hearts that we announce the passing of Roland Joseph Philias Poirier- February 10th 2016 at the Portage General Hospital, surrounded by his children. Dad was 85.
Roland was born on August 29th, 1930 as the 7th child to Palmyre (Beauchemin) and Philias Poirier. He leaves to cherish his memory his special friend Edna Henderson and his six children: Lucille (Claude) Chappellaz of St. Claude, Marcel (Marilyne) of Haywood, Donald (Kristine) of Haywood, Gerald (Nicole) of Haywood, Roland (Lolo) of Haywood and Bob of Haywood; He was a dear Pépère to Nicole, Mona, Collette (Andrew) Palmer, Marty (Mitch), Michele (Mario) Amantea, Tony, Darcy (Mel), Jamie (Andreas), Kimberly (Craig) and Brad (Estee); and Vieux Pépé (great grandfather) to Marie-Claude, Alexandre, Benjamin, Samuel Palmer, Brayden, Kaydence and Marleigha Poirier, Matteo and Mila Amantea and Ryden Poirier (a little RP). He is also survived by his sisters Noella Lachapelle, Ghislaine Corbiere, Estelle Beaudry and Bernadette Beaudry.
His heart belonged to his special friend Edna Henderson of Manitou. Their favourite together time was Old Time Dancing. Edna’s son Kenny (Lisa) and granddaughters Carlee and Ashley were a very big part of Roland’s life.
Roland always cared for the extended families as well. Kayla and Andrew with children Ethan and Jaxon, Nicholas – Kristine’s family. William and Sierra Reimer (Brad Paetkau) – Lolo’s family. Cam Amantea – Michele’s stepson.
Roland was predeceased by his parents Philias (1968) and Palmyre (1974), by all of his brothers Bernard, Aubert, Denis, Azarie, and Paul (Ovide) and by sisters Gertrude Gaudry and Cecile Poirier (at the age of 2). He was also predeceased by the mother of his children Madeleine Piché in 2008.
Apart from a few years of working as a mechanic in Swan Lake with his brother Bernard, Roland spent his life in the trucking and concrete business. He was a family man and always provided his family with knowledgeable life lessons whether fixing things or making things. He worked hard long hours. Roland’s business of R Poirier and Sons Ready Mix was eventually incorporated as Haywood Concrete Products Ltd. Up until this past December, Dad came around to the office and plant “to check up on things”. He was so proud to see his sons and grandson’s dedication to his concrete passion.
Dad was a fixer of things – whether or not they were broken. He was a “patenteur”. We all know that with Roland there, Heaven will have a fix for anything and everything.
Dad’s greatest joy was the outdoors. He enjoyed many activities but his highlight was his ATV, especially so on his recent Polaris Ace. His passion was not only to go ride, but take weekend trips. This past summer he was so excited to ride his Ace on a 400km trip to Lake of the Prairies.
