Obituary

Agnes Simoens

(née Devos)

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mrs. Agnes Simoens.  She passed away peacefully at 76 years of age on July 11, 2021, at the Notre Dame Foyer.

Mom was born the 5th of 6 children on a farm in Bruxelles.  She grew up with lots of hard work, good food, religion, laughter and cards – all things she carried on with our family.

Mom and Dad were married on December 28, 1964; and farmed together in Bruxelles.  Mom and Dad shared a love of music, dancing, games, good food, the love of the land, and most importantly, the love of family.  They spent hours playing music and singing together, visiting with family and friends, playing cards and going for drives to check the crops or play the slot machines.

Mom raised us with humor, integrity, religion, and a strong work ethic.  She believed in working hard and taking pride in your work, but at the same time enjoying the work.  We could laugh as much picking stones as we did sitting in the kitchen playing cards.  We were definitely a family who worked and played together.

Mom spent her days working with Dad on the farm, keeping a spotless house and cooking and then spent many evenings gardening and caring for her flowers.  Mom was very involved with the community.  The Fall suppers, funeral luncheons, school committee, the Lioness and the church were her main committees. Mom loved people and made lifelong friends everywhere she went.  Her family, in-laws and friends were extremely important to her.  Each grandchild and great grandchild brought great joy.

Her special friendships at the Notre Dame Foyer helped her through the pandemic and grieving our dad when the visiting was so restricted. She made a point of knowing every worker’s name and knew what was happening in their lives and genuinely cared about them.  The staff in turn cared for mom and took excellent care of her until the end.

She leaves to mourn her children, Kathleen (Darryl), Teena (Mark), Kelly (Tammy), Vallene (Patrick) and son-in-law Andre; her grandchildren, Anthony (Catherine), Devin (Alicia), Tavis (Kamilla), Matthew (Natacha), Amber (Steve), Joshua, Mitchell, Sadie, Dallas, Haley, Skylar, Samantha (Dillon), Emily, James (Tatrina), Ethan, Grady, Blake and Chloe; great-children, Carson, Zachary, Kaitlyn, Henry, Dawson, Brooklyn, Brinn and Charlotte.  Agnes also leaves to mourn her brothers and sisters, Mary-Jane Bogaert, Lillian (Gary) Rummery and Denis (Debra) Devos as well as her in-laws, Alida Verstraeten, Diane Labossiere and Ele (Reynald) Bourdeaud’hui, Pamela Devos, along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Agnes was predeceased by her husband John, daughter Lori, her parents, Edouard and Germaine, her parents-in-law, Leon and Catherine, her brothers Louis (Lorette) and Roland Devos,  her in-laws, Marcel Bogaert, Albert Verstraeten, Vic Labossiere, Margaret (Ed) Wytinck as well as her nephew Tommy Labossiere and great-nephew Orry Godard.

We are sad to see you go, but we know you will be happy to be with Dad and Lori again.
