Obituary

Emma Emslie

(née Hildebrand)

Emma Martha Emslie Kauenhofen née Hildebrand passed away at the age of 94 years on Saturday, March 9th, 2024 at Boundary Trails Hospital. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Emma was born on November 2nd, 1929, in the 1-6 district, in the RM of Stanley. Emma was born to her Mother Lydia, and her father Reinhold Hildebrand.

Emma was predeceased by her eldest son Lorne Kauenhofen, siblings Albert, Samuel, Alfred and sister Alice.

She is survived by her sister Mildred and brother Donald, daughters Brenda (Peter) and Terry (Pete), sons Rodger (Leslie), and Gregory (Penny), 12 grandchildren, 31 Great grandchildren, and 8 Great Great grandchildren.

Emma attended school in the Brown District until grade 6. She was very smart, could quickly solve problems in her head, a master at spelling, and had impeccable handwriting. She enjoyed writing letters and stories. In her late 50’s, she took her GED exam.

Emma left school to be a farm worker for many years. She later had a variety of different jobs. She really enjoyed bookkeeping, and the food hospitality industry. Emma had her own housekeeping business for several years in Brandon before moving back to Morden to be closer to her parents. She continued to be a hard worker, well into her 80’s. She was cooking meals for the senior centre, and baking at her daughter’s restaurant where she was famous for her cinnamon buns.

Emma loved to knit and crochet. She had a passion for sewing, often creating her own patterns. Emma enjoyed reading, puzzles and playing games. She loved fishing and camping which she still enjoyed at 93 years young. Emma loved dancing, which she would still do around the house every chance she had.  She was an ex extreme competitor in the games of Canasta and Crib, which she especially loved playing with family and her cherished friends and the Legion.

Emma was still young at heart, until her health started to decline, she could outwork and outplay those much younger than her. In her 80’s, Emma was still thrilled to go for motorcycle, four-wheeler, and snowmobile rides. Until her passing, she never aged over 64. If someone would say her real age, she would say “what, I am not” with a wink.

Emma loved and cherished time spent with all her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. She always enjoyed spending time with her companion dog, Shaky, which she had for 15 years.

She had amazing powerful hands and arms, her massages and especially her famous bear hugs will be greatly missed.

Emma was a member of the Lutheran Church, and a member of the Legion-Lioness Club.
