Obituary

Lena Hird

(Gorrie)

Mom passed away Thursday, January 13, 2022, at the Treherne Hospital. She was born one of eight children to Gordon and Lena Gorrie on December 15, 1933. Her mom passed away when she was eight years old and she learned to garden, cook, clean and can at an early age. They remained a passion of hers until the end.  Mom always gave her dad credit for keeping the family together.

In 1954 she married James Hird.  She always said she married into a wonderful family and had the best mother-in-law.  They had five children, Bill (Kathleen), Linda, Dwayne (Ardith), George and Sheila and raised the Triggs kids after Shirley and Nelson’s passing.  They had six grandchildren, Derek Hird (Francine), Suzanne Hird (Brennan), Steven (Jolene) Hird, Randall Mowat (Kristyn), James (Melissa) Mowat, Kathleen Mowat (Jake) and honorary grandchildren.  She was so proud of her five great grandchildren, Emilee, Adalyn, Eliza, Wallace and Austin.  They lit up her life and she always looked forward to seeing them and knowing what they were doing.

Mom also leaves to mourn sister Grace Neufeld and brother Winston Gorrie, sisters-in-law Jean Hird, Ollie Gorrie, Alice Gorrie and brother-in-law Ken Buchanan along with several nieces and nephews and many friends near and far.

Mom loved gardening and took great pride in her flowers.  She also loved her birds.  Hummingbirds would buzz and fight at her feeders as she would sit and watch them.  She had orioles and several blue jays as regular visitors and would refer to her bird book when an unknown species showed up. Mom was Annie Oakley, though with her BB gun, when the squirrels appeared.

Even though you leave a hole in our lives, you are always with us and no longer in pain and at peace reunited with dad.  Rest in peace.

Cremation has taken place and a service will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Woodlands Cemetery, Treherne United Church or to the Cancer Society.

Don’t cry for me

Don’t shed a tear

Or feel sorrow on this day

For as long as you

Will remember me I haven’t passed away

Don’t cry for me

For I have lived

More life than I could dream

I thank the Lord for all I’ve had

And everything I’ve seen
