Obituary

Margaret Helen Lussier

(née Bullen)

1927 – 2023

With heavy hearts the family announces the passing of Margaret Lussier on July 13, 2023 at the Notre Dame de Lourdes Foyer with family by her side.  Mom was born on October 1, 1927 in a small log house 10 miles from Treherne.  Our Mother graced the world with her twin sister, Nan.  Born to parents, Walter and May Bullen, she would cherish long life relationships with siblings Bill, Jean, Bob, Nan and Norman.

Coming from very humble beginnings, Mom would persevere.  At the age of 10, she cleaned a two-storey boarding house and would continue to work hard for the rest of her life.  After graduation from high school, she was recruited by the bank manager at the Somerset RBC.  There she met and later married the love of her life, Donald, on June 27, 1953.  They settled in Somerset and in the next 11 years, they would have 6 children.  Unfortunately, their last child, Joseph, would pass away at birth.  Mom and Dad were together for 45 years until Dad’s passing in 1999.

Mom had an uncanny ability for organizing and gifted her family with years of amazing get togethers with family and friends.  Having grown up eating not much more than porridge, she blessed her family with extraordinary meals and baking.  The cold storage was always full every fall with hundreds of jars of delicious canning.  No wonder we all grew up to be so healthy.

Mom was ambitious as she explored several avenues of business before landing the position of administrator for the Rural Municipality of Lorne.  She loved her job and here she met many new lifelong friends.  She also loved curling and had so much fun.  We would often laugh at the many stories that were later told.  A nice balance of hard work and fun times would become Mom’s motto.

A commitment to community was something that would become a main focus in Mom’s life once the family grew up.  She would dedicate herself to committees until she was well into her 80’s.  As a pillar of the community, she was the driving force behind many projects such as the Somerset Manor, Somerset Centennial, The Festival of Nations, The History Book, The Medical Clinic and participated on so many committees.  Her jewel was the Bingo Committee on which she was Treasurer for 45 years but never played a game.  Her last “hurrah”, as she would say, was her Rose Garden.

Mom enjoyed many of her travels over the years but the times at the cottage at Y point, Pelican Lake provided some of the best memories.  She was never a fan of the water but to watch the shenanigans from her spot on shore worked for her.

Family was a major focus for Mom. She could never have too many grandchildren and kept close count of all the great grandchildren which amounted to 42.  Before her 95th birthday, our Mother became a great great grandmother and five generations of our family began.  They were ALL her pride and joy.  With her high quality knitting skills and passion for making baby quilts, she blessed each and everyone with handmade gifts.

How do you put into words such an amazing life? It is impossible, however we can use her life as an example for generations to come.  Work hard, have fun, be kind and believe in your amazing abilities!

We love you, Mom (Grandma the Great) and will miss you so very much.  We know Mom and Dad are once again together within the loving arms of Jesus!

Mom leaves to mourn her brothers, Bob Bullen and Norman Bullen, her in-laws Mary Lussier, Bob (Claudette) Lussier.  She was predeceased by her siblings Bill (Ena) Bullen, Jean (John) Turner and Nan Suche; nephew Bob Turner and niece Doreen Webb; her in-laws, Ede Bullen, Irene Bullen, Denise (Joe) Payjack, Rene (Arlene) Lussier, Norma (Edgar) Clark and Lucille (Donald) Rondeau.

Her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren will celebrate her life forever.

She is survived by her children Vicki (Gerry) Labossiere, Marilyn (Allan) Lowry, Bev (Harvey) Hilhorst, Michelle (Andy) Sierens and Raymond (Simone) Lussier and all her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
