Obituary

Marie-Rose Antoine

Marie-Rose Antoine of Haywood, Manitoba passed away peacefully at the Portage Hospital on April 21, 2024 at the age of 80 years.

She is survived by her son Ron (Nelia) Antoine, her grandson Brandon Antoine (Chantelle Reynolds) and by her brother Ernie Antoine and sister Valerie Fayant along with numerous nieces and nephews who she cared deeply for. She will be especially missed by her life partner of 50 years, Paul Slobodian.

Marie-Rose was predeceased by her sister Rita Landriault, sister-in-law Mona Antoine and by her brother-in-law Al Fayant.

Marie-Rose was born in Winnipeg February 4, 1944.  She was the second oldest of four children raised by Ernest and Anna Antoine. She attended École Sacré-Cœur School, Hugh John MacDonald School, and finished her schooling at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute.

Marie-Rose started her career in the service industry in 1960 at the age of 16, with her Aunt Blanche, her sisters, Rita and Valerie and brother Ernie at Kresges until 1973. From there, moved to K-Mart in St. James till 1975. After leaving there she went to the Aberdeen Hotel on Carlton Street where she was a waitress, bartender and part-time bouncer when needed. She worked there until she retired early in 1991, due to back problems. In her later years, she took on the responsibility of the Haywood Hall for local events, with her partner Paul.

Her biggest passions were driving her car from one end of the city to the other, driving friends and family wherever they needed to go, often not letting the car cool down before her next adventure. Marie-Rose was an avid sports fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the WHA Winnipeg Jets and the current Winnipeg Jets. She also enjoyed taking her son and his friends to the AWA Wrestling matches at the Winnipeg Arena. She enjoyed going to the horse races at the Assiniboine Downs with her best partner, Paul, where they would bet on the horses, and do a little VLT to get her mind off the thoughts of the day. Another one of her big passions was her flower gardens, where every spring she would plant an abundance of flowers at the house.  She loved her family and especially her one son and grandson and will be missed by her many friends and family.
